What exactly is Spiritual Rescue?

Those of you who have read “The Virgin’s Prophecy”, will be aware of Jean Mathers, the Secretary of the Spiritual Rescue Group based in North London. She wrote this introduction back in the 1970s. Along with the comments by Maurice Barbanell, Editor of ‘Psychic News’ at that time, it should give you an idea of the scope and depth of the spiritual work to which the Group dedicated themselves.

A Short Introduction to Rescue Work. By Jean Mathers

Communication between man and the spirits of those who have passed over is a natural phenomenon which has always existed. The physical body is the temporary housing for the spirit during its brief span on earth. After shedding the body, the spirit returns to the spiritual realms, taking with it the characteristics acquired in this world.

The spirits of those who led good lives will congregate and continue to live in harmony and service. Equally, those who failed to listen to the dictates of their conscience, an infallible guide to correct action, will find themselves in a spiritual realm inhabited by those of a similar calibre. The type of life lived in the physical body always determines the choice of realm. For ease of reference, the harmonious spiritual realms are called the ‘upper realms’ and those inhabited by unevolved souls, the ‘lower realms.’

Thus, unlike the world in which we live, good and evil are separated, with the exception of the middle astral plane entered when a soul passes over, a ‘half-way house’ common to both the upper and lower realms. Here a soul will stay for a period until he gradually feels the pull of the realm for which his life has prepared him and to which he will ultimately gravitate. The middle astral also shelters souls who do not realise they have passed over, imagining themselves still living their former earthly existence.

Spiritual work offers many paths to those who desire not only to gain and spread knowledge but to serve. One such avenue is spiritual rescue work. This service is comparable to the physical rescue given by world-wide organisations whose trained members help victims of disasters such as earthquakes, floods, famines, and the aftermath of war.

To speak of ‘spiritual disaster’ may tax the understanding of those who are new to the subject, yet it applies to the vast numbers of souls who pass over in a spiritually diseased condition and enter realms where degradation and despair prevail.

A rescue circle endeavours to elevate such souls to the realms of love and harmony by showing them the way to overcome the dis-ease of the spirit. The sitters achieve this by the force of kind thoughts and words of understanding for the soul’s dilemma. They lead him gently to the realisation that his spiritual future is bright, despite his misdeeds, provided he is truly repentant and forgives himself for his mistakes. At this point, he goes forward to the upper astral realms where willing helpers ensure his full recovery.

Preliminary training for rescue works consists of lectures, discussions, observation of and participation in rescues. It is a period during which candidates decide whether they are drawn to the work, and the members who conduct the training are able to confirm the candidate’s suitability. Before full membership is attained, one of the circle’s Guides will examine the spiritual condition of the candidate to make sure all is well.

Dealing with lower souls is potentially dangerous; therefore, in this circle a very strong spiritual protection is given to rescue workers. Each individual can enhance this protection by conforming strictly to the harmony and discipline of the circle. Since thoughts of kindness and understanding are the basis of the work, it is evident that members should adopt, to the best of their ability, attitudes of sympathy and compassion for others, not only in the circle but in their daily lives.

Every human being is open to influences from the spiritual realms. When someone projects love and kind thoughts, souls from the upper realms are attracted to that person and will help increase these attitudes. In contrast, the negative aspects of hostility, selfishness, material gain or any of the less desirable attributes, will invite the attention of entities from the lower realms who will then promote further degeneration.

In 1974 and 1975, Maurice Barbanell, (editor of ‘Psychic News’ and ‘Two Worlds’) was invited to observe the work of the circle. Here are his comments, extracted from subsequent editorials in the Psychic News.

1974. ‘I attended last week one of my most remarkable seances, conducted by a group specialising in rescuing earthbound entities. As its members, all dedicated like their medium, shun publicity, I do not identify them. There is a strict discipline with all the members. I was impressed because many of them are young. I witnessed their treatment of two associated entities in the lower astral realms – each spoke to one another through different mediums. It was fascinating to watch how the capable sitters finally managed to lessen their darkness and provide them with a glimmer of light as the beginning of their progress.’

1975. ‘………my next night was spent visiting the remarkable rescue circle I have previously mentioned and Jean Mathers has described. Its efficiency and organisation are outstanding. The circle, consisting of highly-developed mediums, dedicated like all other members, has a splendid technique …………. members then start the often long task of making these earthbound people aware of their plight and helping them to find the Light and progress. It was one of the most impressive demonstrations of spirit power I have witnessed in a long experience.’
